Exterior shutter cutouts can be just about any design that isn’t too intricate. Architecturally speaking, they can be found on bungalows, cottage and colonial style homes from the 1920s- 1940s. In fact, often times Sears mail order houses came with a “select your cutout” option. This allowed homeowners to personalize their homes. It’s typical to find a cutout on a board and batten shutter style. Other styles you’d find one are on the upper panel of a panel style shutter or a panel/louver combination shutter. Some of the more popular options include exterior shutter cutouts with crescent moon, trees, diamonds, fleur-de-lis or hearts. As you can see below, however, the options are endless!
We’ve seen so many different options for exterior shutter cutouts, it can be hard to pick a favorite. I have an idea. I haven’t seen this anywhere, so I don’t know if it’s been tried and failed or never tried. What if you could have interchangeable cutouts? Imagine having a fireworks display for July and January. Then you could have the witches flying for October. A snowman for the wintertime. A leaf in the fall. A flower in the spring. Maybe a heart for February and a shamrock for March. I’m probably getting carried away. It would mean a lot of work to change them out. But, if you just had one window that had changeable cutouts, perhaps it’d be worth it!
