How One Client Took Their Exterior from Standard to One of a Kind

When most people think about exterior shutters, they think about style and color. Maybe they spend some time deciding between a raised panel and a board and batten. And that’s totally fine — those decisions matter.

But every once in a while, a client comes to us and wants to take things a step further. They want something that doesn’t exist in a catalog. Something that’s never going to show up on the house two streets over.

That’s where custom cut-outs come in.

What Is a Custom Cut-Out Shutter?

A custom cut-out is exactly what it sounds like — a shape or design that is cut directly into the face of the shutter panel. It can be a simple geometric shape, a decorative motif, a diamond, a heart, a coastal silhouette, or in this client’s case, four squares arranged to create one larger square design at the top of each shutter.

The result is a shutter that has personality. Up close, it’s a detail that makes you stop and look twice. From the street, it adds texture and visual interest that makes the whole exterior feel intentional and custom — because it is.

This Client Took It One Step Further

Here’s where this project got really fun.

After choosing composite shutters with the four-square cut-out design, this client decided to add glass inserts to the cut-outs themselves. So instead of an open cut-out letting light pass through, each shutter now features a small glass pane sitting right inside the design.

It’s the kind of detail that feels almost architectural — like something you’d see on a high-end custom build where every single element was thought through from the beginning. The glass catches the light differently throughout the day, adds a layer of dimension to the shutter, and makes the whole front of the home feel completely unique.

We had never seen it done quite like this before. And honestly? We loved it.

Why Composite Is the Right Choice for Custom Cut-Outs

When you’re adding intricate detail work to a shutter, material matters even more than usual. Composite shutters are the ideal canvas for custom cut-outs for a few reasons.

They hold their shape. Wood can warp, swell, and shift over time — especially around cut-outs where the panel is thinner and more vulnerable to moisture. Composite doesn’t have that problem. What you install is what you keep, year after year.

They paint beautifully. A crisp, clean cut-out needs a crisp, clean finish. Composite takes paint evenly and holds it without cracking or peeling the way wood often does over time.

They are built to last. Custom details are an investment. You want a material underneath them that is going to protect that investment for decades — not one that’s going to demand maintenance every other season.

Is a Custom Cut-Out Right for Your Home?

If you’ve been looking at your exterior and feeling like something is just a little too standard, a custom cut-out might be exactly what you’re looking for. It works on almost any shutter style and can be designed to complement your home’s existing architectural details.

The whole point of made-to-order is that you’re not limited to what already exists. You get to create something that’s uniquely yours — and we get to help you build it.
